The role of vowel type, preceding consonant and lexical frequency on final vowel devoicing in Continental French

چکیده

Final vowel devoicing is a feature of Continental French in which utterance-final vowels lose their voicing and produce fricative-like whistles. Previous studies have examined the phenomenon’s phonological and pragmatic tendencies, revealing its preference for high vowels in open syllables at the ends of statements. Here, we re-examine and expand upon previous work by investigating the role of vowel type, preceding consonant and lexical frequency. Results reveal that high rounded vowels devoice more frequently than high unrounded ones, and that stops precede devoiced vowels at significantly higher rates than fricatives or sonorants. No significant effect was found for voicing in the preceding segment. A slight effect for lexical frequency was also found, such that words that were more frequent were more likely to be realized with a devoiced vowel. This suggests that although final devoicing is heavily predictable via phonological constraints, it also exists on the lexical level.

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect

In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...

Devoicing in post-vocalic canadian-French obstruants

In Canadian French, besides periodic phonation, other cues can be associated with the voiced-voiceless distinction due to the application of phonological rules. These cues, mainly duration and vowel quality, may be present in the consonant itself (voiced consonants are shorter than their voiceless counterparts) and in the preceding vowels (duration and vowel quality). The cues are related to th...

Temporal, Spectral Evidence of Devoiced Vowels in Korean

Vowel devoicing is a phenomenon that is reported to occur in many languages such as Japanese, Parisian and Montreal French, Turkish and English. This paper investigates vowel devoicing in Korean. A devoiced vowel does not exhibit characteristic vocal tract resonances, and instead is realized as a long interval of aspiration or frication following consonant release, resulting in non-distinct seg...

Factors affecting utterance-final vowel devoicing in spontaneous Japanese

Investigation of spontaneous speech corpora has shown that vowel devoicing in Japanese is a statistical phenomena. However, factors behind vowel devoicing have not been fully studied. In addition, there have been no studies that specifically examined pre-pausal vowel devoicing. In this paper, we investigate vowel devoicing in the pre-pausal position, in particular, vowel devoicing occurring at ...

Gemination of Consonant in Spontaneous Speech: An Analysis of the "Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese"

In Japanese, there is frequent alternation between CV morae and moraic geminate consonants. In this study, we analyzed the phonemic environments of consonant gemination (CG) using the “Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ).” The results revealed that the environment in which gemination occurs is, to some extent, parallel to that of vowel devoicing. However, there are two crucial differences. One...
